However, there just was something about it – gathering outside to watch the sun rise and singing a few hymns and choruses – that was really powerful and meaningful. It was a simple setup, too – just me with my trusty, battery-powered Yamaha PSR-270 keyboard (I dragged that thing to Ecuador on a mission trip years ago, got it soaking wet in a rain storm and it still works to this day!) and an extra vocalist or two, Scripture readings, songs and a short sermon.
I’ve designed my new Glorious Day Easter Sunrise Service Guide for that kind of service. I can imagine it being used outside as the sun rises, or even at a more low-key 8am Easter Sunday morning blended service.
If musicians are scarce at that early hour use the included stereo accompaniment tracks (if I were planning this type of service today I’d go this route and play the tracks from a boombox. Yep, they still sell those things at BestBuy!) And as with all my arrangements, they’ll sound great at their core of just piano or with an added acoustic guitar.
Lead the service with a full praise team or choir, but I think it would sound amazing with just a male and female worship leading duo. This team would trade off leading the songs – one on melody, the other on harmony.
The final song of the service guide is “Glorious Day.” This is not the famous version by Casting Crowns, but a song I wrote years ago with UK worship leader Tim Light that’s one of my favorites. It sums up nicely the Easter theme with a charge to spread the news. The Casting Crowns version would also work wonderfully if you’d prefer that option.
