Hymn Ideas: A Mighty Fortress > ideas > home

by Don Chapman

Did you know the last Sunday in October is Reformation Sunday? It was on October 31, 1517, that Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg.

Growing up Baptist, I had never heard of "Reformation Sunday" until I worked at a Presbyterian Church. The day inspired me to create one of my favorite HymnChart arrangements: "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

The hymn is in C major, so I suggest opening your praise set with it, followed by other praise songs in C like Hillsong's "Hear Our Praises," Brenton Brown's "Lord Reign In Me" and Tim Light's "Our God Reigns" [download Tim's song for free at WorshipIdeas.com.]

If you don't have a contemporary arrangement, just do the hymnal version like usual, then segue directly into the praise songs. However, a contemporary arrangement certainly helps worship flow. When I combine hymns with praise songs, my goal is to transition as smoothly as possible - I don't want people to even realize we've moved from a hymn to a praise chorus!
