Hymn Ideas: Joyful, Joyful > ideas > home

by Don Chapman

"Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" is one of the most versatile hymns I know. With different lyrics you can use it at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

My upbeat HymnCharts version is in E major so it will blend with any upbeat praise song in E like "Let Everything That Has Breath," "My Redeemer Lives" and "You Are Holy."

Every good worship leader should own a hymnal. My hymnal of choice is "The Celebration Hymnal" from Word/Integrity. Use it to find alternate lyrics.

Take a look at hymn #90: "Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee." Look down at the bottom of the page. HYMN TO JOY is the tune name, and 8.7.8.7.D. is the meter.

Look up 8.7.8.7.D. in the Metrical Index in the back of the book. There are several tunes with the same meter.

I found a compatible meter with Thanksgiving lyrics: #796. "In Thanksgiving, Let Us Praise Him," written by Claire Cloninger, will work with the melody of "Joyful, Joyful."

For Christmas lyrics, use #271.

For Easter lyrics, use #365.

Both 271 and 365 only have 2 verses. If you want more, just use the regular first verse of "Joyful Joyful" and then tack on the other 2 seasonal verses.

Here's a hymn that most people know, and the seasonal lyrics will freshen the song.
