This is one of the nicest letters we've ever
received, and we had to post the entire email:
Hi Don,
I am the choir director at a medium-sized,
aging Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
I am also the leader of our Praise Team,
called Psalm 150, which has been in existence
for the past 16 months.
We have struggled trying to get a "contemporary"
service going, meeting resistance from a
few members and lukewarm support from our
pastors, who are understandably afraid to
lose members in a church that really can't
afford to lose any. The band's ministry,
as we see as our call from God, is to try
to reach out to the many, many unchurched
people who live right in our own neighborhood,
within just a few blocks of our campus.
Our longtime membership, those who have grown
up and lived in the church their entire life,
is comfortable with liturgical services and
hymns sung to an organ. But it's our belief
that the offspring of the baby boomers, many
of whom have never been to church, are not
comfortable with that genre.
However, we see a strong need to cling to
the hymns, as well. Research suggests that
GenXers who find their way to church don't
just want a steady diet of praise choruses.
That's where HymnCharts.com has really, really
helped. Our pastors insist that our contemporary
services must contain at least two hymns,
which I believe is a good plan. But it was
killing me to do the arranging. I'm not schooled
in it and it was everything I could do to
produce even the most basic, rudimentary
arrangements for our small band.
Your arrangements are so accessible, so easy
to play and sing. And the added parts for
C instruments, Bb instruments, synth strings,
etc., have made a huge difference. Using
a combination of only three instruments -
guitar, keys and drums - we've managed to
do some truly memorable and wonderful hymns.
Our congregation is really latching on to
what we're doing, and they're changing their
attitude toward our service. Our ministry
is showing signs of life! Hallelujah!
So much of the credit goes to you and these
wonderful arrangements. Thank you for your
website. It's well worth the price of the
subscription.
Keep up the great work.
