from Hymncharts arranger Don Chapman:
Can you believe it’s been over a decade since I arranged Joy to the World? My last version was back in 2013, and a lot has changed in worship music since then.
I decided it was time for a fresh coat of paint. If you are looking for the perfect, upbeat way to kick off your December worship or finish out your Christmas Eve service, this new modern update is it.
The Secret: The Riff
One of my favorite “tricks” to do as an arranger is to create an intro melodic riff that doesn’t just sit there, it actually integrates into the melody of the hymn. The arrangement starts with the piano laying down this hook, quiet and contempletive. Thank you, college counterpoint class 😂 Music theory has really paid off over the years!
You’ll notice how that intro riff weaves perfectly with the vocal melody as the song progresses. It adds a layer of musicality that makes the hymn feel fresh without losing the classic feel.
Easier on Your Band (and You)
Christmas services are stressful enough. You don’t need complex arrangements that require five rehearsals to nail. Joy to the World is short (3 verses) and tight. This version is more concise than my previous arrangements. It builds naturally from that opening piano riff all the way to a big finish.
No more “hiccups”: I got rid of those pesky 2/4 measures usually found in my older arrangements (more about this later!) This version has a steady groove that is much easier to follow.
Keys and Vocals
I recorded the demo in the key of D, which sits in a great spot for a tenor worship leader. However, if you are leading with a female vocalist or utilizing your choir, you might find that a bit high. Don’t worry – I’ve included transposed charts, and the key of C will likely be your sweet spot for those groups.
It’s high energy, volunteer-friendly, and ready for your team!
Blending Ideas:
Today, worship leaders are blessed with countless versions of classic carols by your favorite artists, and most upbeat ones can easily follow Joy to the World. Here are some newer songs to consider:
- He Shall Reign Forevermore / Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher
A perfect follow-up to “the Savior reigns… He rules the world,” this anthem narrows the focus to a single, powerful declaration: “He shall reign forevermore, forevermore.” It invites your congregation to sit in the “King of kings and Lord of lords” theme of Joy to the World with a modern, melodic hook that feels both regal and intimate. - Angels (Glory to God) / Phil Wickham, Jonathan Smith
Built around the angels’ announcement of Jesus’ birth, “Glory to God in the highest” echoes the “heaven and nature sing” line from Joy to the World. The bright, driving arrangement feels like a full-on celebration, extending the “repeat the sounding joy” energy into a shimmering, modern worship moment. - For Unto Us – Open The Eyes Of My Heart / Paul Baloche
This song creatively weaves Handel’s classic “For unto us a Child is born” with Paul Baloche’s modern worship chorus “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord.” It takes the prophetic joy of Isaiah 9 and turns it into a personal prayer for revelation, inviting your congregation not just to celebrate Christ’s birth, but to truly see and worship Him as King.
